Ex Preso Martínez: The Best Bar in Olavide for Coffee and Cocktails

If you haven't been yet, Ex Preso Martínez is one of the more interesting hospitality concepts to open in Madrid recently — a space that quite literally changes personality as the day goes on.

In the morning, it runs as a specialty coffee shop, with a strong take-away game and a brunch menu served from 11am to 3pm featuring dishes like french toast, avocado eggs, and grilled cheese. But from 6pm onward, the coffee machine hands things over to the cocktail shaker and the mood starts to shift. The menu features around ten signature cocktails, most of them coffee-based, alongside beers, wine, and soft drinks to go with shareable plates — oysters, steak tartare, baba ganoush, fried broccoli.

As the night goes on, the lighting changes, the tables fold away, the music rises, and the space transforms into a lively cocktail bar. The concept isn't subtle about its inspiration, either. The name itself winks at the espresso martini, arguably the defining cocktail of our era — and fittingly, the bar sits on Calle Trafalgar, right by Plaza de Olavide, one of the most happening pockets of the city, next door to the bar Macera (no coincidence).

The design leans into that day-to-night duality too: steel and red velvet set the scene, with retractable furniture that helps the space transition smoothly from breakfast spot to bar. Olavide has quietly become one of Chamberí's best neighborhoods for an all-day plan — coffee in the morning, brunch at midday, drinks after dark, all within a few steps of the square. Ex Preso Martínez captures that rhythm better than almost anywhere else in the area, which is exactly why we wanted to bring ROS coffee into their bar for a night.
