Bruma in the press: how our coffee made it into GQ, Marca, AS, Expansión and ¡HOLA!

When coffee makes it into the national press

This summer, without us specifically seeking it out, Bruma —our specialty coffee from Nueva Segovia, Nicaragua— has appeared in five of Spain's most-read media outlets: GQ, Marca, AS, Expansión and ¡HOLA!. The reason isn't us, but a three-month collaboration between Carlos I and Ex-preso Martínez, one of Madrid's benchmark establishments for specialty coffee and cocktails, which reinterprets the traditional carajillo through three signature cocktails.

The collaboration: Jerez brandy with specialty coffee

The proposal, named "Expresamente Carlos," combines the three varieties of Carlos I —Original, Amontillado, and Pedro Ximénez— with coffee in three creations that can be enjoyed at Ex-preso Martínez (Trafalgar, 17) throughout the summer:

  • Martínez I Carlos Crush: an updated version of the carajillo with cold brew and Carlos I Original.
  • Carlos I Affogato: vanilla ice cream, espresso, and Carlos I Pedro Ximénez, halfway between dessert and cocktail.
  • Carlos I Summer Spritz: Carlos I Amontillado, citrus, soda, and a touch of honey, designed for brunch or an afternoon drink.

Each cocktail is served at €12, and during the venue's brunch, it can be paired with a toast of 100% Iberian acorn-fed ham from Sánchez Romero Carvajal (€16). For those who want to take it home, there's also a limited-edition pack (€35) with Carlos I Original, Nicaraguan coffee, and the recipes.

Why Bruma

For a collaboration that plays with such distinct brandy profiles —from rounded and structured notes to dry or sweet profiles— a coffee with a balanced profile was needed, one capable of dialoguing with all of them without imposing itself. That's where Bruma comes in: grown in the mountains of Nueva Segovia and roasted here in Madrid, with notes of cocoa and chestnut that do just that, complement without competing.

Ultimately, it's the same philosophy with which we roast each batch: finding the profile that best accompanies, whether in a standalone cup or, as in this case, within a cocktail.

A project by Mariano

None of this would have existed without Mariano, from Ex-preso Martínez, the mind behind the entire proposal. He is the one who shaped this collaboration, who thought about how to unite the world of Jerez brandy with specialty coffee, and who decided to trust Bruma to do it. Working with someone who thinks like this, who sees connections where others don't, and who cares for every detail of the experience, is a true privilege. Thank you, Mariano, for your trust and for continuing to push specialty coffee in Madrid into new places.
